Mount Vesuvius WWII
This picture was taken in 1944 during the World War II by US B-25 bombers. This is Mount Vesuvius in Italy, around which were stationed a number of US aircraft for vigilance when without any warning this volcano burst. It was the 340th Bombardment Group of the US Air Force that was on duty at the nearby Pompeii Airfield near Terzigno, Italy.
The hot lava gulped down 80-90 aircraft. Today the foot of the volcano is highly populated.
Manta Ray
This might not seem like much to you but this is the largest stingray caught till date and it’s a mammoth. When it was caught in 1933 its size was 19 feet, 9 inches wing-tip to wing-tip. And its weight was 5,000 pounds. It was actually caught by accident; got tangled in the anchor line of a boat.
Manta rays are among the vulnerable species of the world and they are threatened by the pollution caused by human activities and fishing activities.
Hard Rime
I know it looks like limestone but this is actually snow. Can you guess what is under all that snow and why is this guy risking his life like that trying to take all this snow off? He is shaving snow off a cellular tower after an immense storm.
This frozen snow on this tower is called hard rime. It can be pretty dangerous on high altitudes and has caused many airplane crashes.
The Endurance
This sense numbing picture is of the ship named Endurance which was stuck in an ice floe in 1914. The crew of this ship actually decided on waiting for the spring for the ice to melt but that was not a really great idea. When the ice began to melt it put pressure on the vessel and the ship broke down and began to sink. The crew did make it back safe to land almost about 500 days after their ship was stuck.
A Monster
In 1957, a woman in Australia Krystina Pawlowski shot this 28-foot crocodile and by far it is the largest crocodile to have been found in Australia. After the kill, Pawlowski was called “One shot”. However, this is what Pawlowski said about the incident and about her regret of killing the crocodile- “He never woke up, and he never knew we were there. He was the most beautiful animal. If someone offered me a million dollars to shoot a crocodile now, I wouldn’t.”
Tasmanian Giant Crab
This crab is known by many names- giant deepwater crab, giant southern crab or queen crab. This mightily humungous animal weighs around 29lb and has a 15-inch shell. It sure does look grumpy and is not really photo friendly. We don’t blame him, no one likes to be separated from the beech.
