Remembering Back

“There it was, Thursday, November 2, 2006. I remember exactly what I had on that day, how I fixed my hair and exactly how excited I was to see my sweet boyfriend Ty for our evening,”  described Amber. She called him after getting ready exactly as per their plan. To her surprise, it wasn’t Ty on the other side.

Forever And Ever

“Ty lived about 10 miles from my house. I told him I would let him know when I was home from school so he could come by to pick me up. Little did I know that when I made that phone call, the details I heard on the other end of the line would change our lives forever. Nothing would ever, ever be the same,” remembered Amber who was unable to utter one single word when she disconnected the call.

A Strange Call

Amber walked out of her room and reached the dining area as she dialed his number. “When Ty’s phone was answered at 4:16 p.m., I knew that was not his voice,” said Amber who could feel something serious has happened. Her dad noticed the sudden change in his daughter’s voice and asked her what is it about…

Who Is This?

“‘Who is this,’ I asked. ‘This is Ty’s assistant principal from school. I just came upon a car accident on my way home. It’s Ty and he is not good. Can you come here?’” Amber recalled the words said by the person on the other line. Her cheerful smile was gone as she started panicking.

Rushing To The Scene

“Wait, what? Why? What happened? And why is he ‘not good?’” said Amber. She didn’t receive any reply but silence. Amber’ father immediately asked her to get in the car. She further added,  “My dad was home and drove me to the scene which was exactly half way between our homes.” While every second was unbearable, Amber had to make the toughest call of her life.

An Uncomfortable Call

“I got in the truck and had to make the dreadful phone calls to his parents. I have only known them for 4 months and now I have to call them and say that their 17-year-old son is ‘not good’?” remembered Amber how terrifying it was that she had to call Ty’s parents and inform them about the accident.
